LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A recall effort has begun against Ward 6 Las Vegas City Councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem Michele Fiore.

A group called "Expel Michele" seeks to remove Fiore and now needs 1911 signatures on a petition from registed voters in the ward to force a recall election.

Fiore was elected to represent Ward 6 back in 2017, and was appointed as Mayor Pro-Tem last year.

Fiore has come under fire recently for comments she's alleged to have made at a convention of Republicans earlier this month, comments that have been described as "racially charged".

The people behind the recall effort say they're not only upset about the remarks Fiore is alleged to have made, but about her backing of an events center at Floyd Lamb State Park

The councilwoman held a press conference at her home on Thursday, and apologized to anyone who might have been offended by what she said at the convention. Fiore has claimed that her own First Amendment rights are under attack.

The controversy over the alleged remarks swelled when fellow City Councilman Cedric Crear this week called for Fiore to be stripped of her Mayor Pro-Tem title.
