Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - A top recruit for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team will be back in court on Thursday after was released from jail by a judge late last week after authorities say he caused a fatal crash by driving impaired

Metro's Traffic Bureau says that just before 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Fort Apache south of Blue Diamond Road at the intersection with Furnace Gulch Avenue.

Evidence at the scene and witnesses' statements indicated a 2016 Hyundai was traveling south on Fort Apache attempting to make a left turn to travel east on Furnace Gulch when a 2016 Dodge traveling north on Fort Apache at a high rate of speed struck the passenger's side of the Hyundai.

Both vehicles slid off the roadway over the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver of the Dodge, 19-year-old Zaon Collins, was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. Investigators say that Collins displayed signs of being impaired and was subsequently booked at the Clark County Detention Center.

Collins went to Bishop Gorman High School and had committed to play basketball for the hometown Rebels.

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 52 year-old Eric Echevarria, was transported to Sunrise Hospital, but passed away from injuries suffered in the crash.
