LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The family of Officer Shay Mikalonis say he remains in critical condition, but he is awake and appears to recognize the family.
The family used the "Police Unity Tour "Team Vegas" Facebook page yesterday to provide an update on Miaklonis, who was shot in the head more than a week ago while while trying to disperse a group of protesters in front of Circus Circus.
Mikalonis remains in critical condition at UMC, and his family says he has a long road to recovery ahead. Mikalonis is currently on a ventilator.
There will be a fundraiser drive this Thursday at the Sahara West Urgent Care, and it will be called "Shay Day."
A number of funds have been set up to help Officer Mikalonis and his family.
The person charged with shooting Mikalonis, 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego, is being held on $1 million bail, with his preliminary hearing scheduled for the end of July.
