LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Improperly disposed fireworks started a house on fire late Friday near Decatur and U.S. 95. Neighbors alerted the occupants of the house that their home was on fire when they saw smoke coming from the roof.
Firefighters responded to the house on Arbor Drive just before midnight on Friday. On arrival smoke was showing from the vents of the attic of a two-story house. It took firefighters less than ten minutes to get the incident under control. The fire was mostly smoldering causing smoke which made it difficult to find the main area of fire. The fire was in a garage wall and the attic area over the garage.
Fire investigators determined the fire stated in a trash container outside against the garage wall. It appears that a large amount of fireworks that were used earlier were put into the trash container, which caught fire and moved up the wall to the attic.
Fire damage was confined to the garage and the attic over the garage. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
The family of five is displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross. There were no reported injuries during the incident.
Fire officials used this blaze to remind people that used fireworks should be soaked in a bucket of water for at least an hour before being in a trash container, as they can remain hot for an extended amount of time and start trash on fire in the container.
