Las Vegas' unemployment rate the highest in state

LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A new report by the state’s Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation shows that, not surprisingly, the highest rate for unemployment in Nevada is in Las Vegas.

DETR's August 2020 economic report shows that Nevada has added 6,500 jobs since July 2020, extending the recovery to a fourth month, although the state is still down 133,600 jobs since August 2019.

Nevada’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 13.2 percent in August and is now below the 13.7 percent high experienced in the 2007 recession.

Though the Las Vegas area saw an increase of 5,900 jobs since July with the trade, transportation, and utilities sector growing the most, total employment saw a decrease of 127,400 jobs. Leisure and hospitality sectors were down the most, with over 72,600 jobs lost compared to August 2019.

Reno  had an increase of 1,900 jobs (0.8%) since July with the government sector growing the most by 900 jobs (3.3%). Compared to August 2019, total employment saw a decrease of 13,500 jobs (-5.5%) with leisure and hospitality sector down the most by 5,700 jobs (-14.1%).

The Carson City area experienced an increase of 300 jobs (1.0%) since July with the trade, transportation, and utilities sector growing the most by 200 jobs (5.4%). Compared to August 2019, total employment saw a decrease of 1,400 jobs (-4.5%) with professional and business services sector down the most by 400 jobs (- 17.4%).

Las Vegas had an unemployment rate of 15.5 percent in August, while thate rate was 7.2 percent in Reno and 7.3 in Carson City.
