Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - ’Tis the season for giving, and the latest World Giving Index shows that the United States has been the most generous country over the course of the last ten years. U.S. donors in 2019 gave more than $449 billion to charity, with 69% of the funds coming directly from individuals, according to the National Philanthropic Trust.
The financial website WalletHub is out with their annual survey of most generous states, and Nevada comes out with our hands in our pockets. We gave at the casino, you could say, ranking 45th overall. Only five states (Rhode Island, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico and Arizona) were deemed less charitable thatn Nevada.
Hurting the Silver State's overall ranking was a last place finish in the "Number of charities per capita" category, a 4th from the bottom rank in the "Percentage of people who donate money" category, a 3rd from the bottom finish in the "Lowest volunteer rate" category and a 2nd from the bottom ranking in the "Lowest percentage of population that donate time" category.
To determine the rankings, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on 19 key indicators of charitable behavior ranging from the volunteer rate to the share of income donated to the share of sheltered homeless.
Our neighbor to the north, Utah, shone brightest in the study, grabbing the "Most charitable state" top spot. Utah was followed by Minnesota, Maryland, oregon and Ohio.
