LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A woman and her dog were rescued after fire broke out at their home near Rancho and Oakey on Thursday night.
Las Vegas firefighters responded to home on Gilmary Ave around 8pm, and saw nothing from the street of the one story wood frame house. When firefighters entered the house, though, they found smoke coming from a rear bedroom.
When firefighters tried to enter the bedroom through a closed door, they could not get the door open. It felt like something was holding the door shut. Firefighters managed to get the door open and found a middle-aged woman and large dog lying against the door and they were rescued by firefighters.
The fire was found in the closet of the bedroom. As firefighters were searching throughout the inside and outside of the house, they found a pile of wood that was stacked against the side of the house outside on fire. A garden hose was lying there where it appeared someone tried to put the fire out. Both of the fires were quickly extinguished.
The woman was taken to the hospital with first and second degree burns to her arms and smoke inhalation. The dog was taken by Animal Control, also suffering from smoke inhalation.
There are no smoke alarms in the residence. The fire appears accidental.
Damage was estimated at $10,000. Two people are displaced but family members arrived on scene to assist them.
