Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – The Boulder City Police Department says residents there are being targeted by a pair of scams and they’re getting the word out to make residents aware of the treachery afoot.

In a typical scenario, the scammer poses as a very official sounding police officer. They may manipulate their caller ID to make the number appear to come from law enforcement. The caller tells the person that there is a warrant out for their arrest for a certain fine amount. The reason for the warrant is anything from a traffic violation, missed jury duty, failure to pay taxes, or other infractions.

The scammer then tells the victim they can immediately make a payment to avoid being arrested. Methods of payment may include cash drop off, eGift cards, or cryptocurrency. These scammers are many times not even in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred, making their apprehension difficult.

BCPD stresses that they never ask for payment or offer to negotiate payment in lieu of arrest over the phone. Residents who have received such calls are encouraged to report them to Boulder City Police.
