Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – An 11-year-old child is dead and a man is in custody after a road rage shooting on the Southern Beltway Friday morning.

The incident happened in the westbound lanes of 215 between I-11 and Gibson Road.

Henderson Police say two drivers had merged onto 215 West from 11 South and were jockeying for position on the freeway. They say both drivers rolled their windows down and exchanged words when one of the drivers fired a shot at the second vehicle. That bullet struck an 11-year-old who was riding in the back seat.

HPD said that the driver of the car that had been fired upon struck the second vehicle, causing both drivers to stop.

After getting out of their vehicles, more words were exchanged. A Metro Police squad that happened to be in the area stopped at the scene and took the 22-year old who fired the fatal shot, identified as Tyler Matthew Johns, into custody.

The 11-year-old was taken to University Medical Center, but couldn’t be saved.

Johns was booked into the Henderson Detention Center and booked on suspicion of open murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied structure or vehicle.

During a court appearance on Saturday, a judge ordered Johns held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
