Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) -The city of Las Vegas has activated 22 cameras in 11 downtown locations close to the Fremont Street Experience and major thoroughfares in an effort to improve public safety.

The cameras, which went online on New Year’s Eve, can read license plates and notify law enforcement in real time of stolen and wanted vehicles.

There are limitations to what the cameras can do. They’re not used for traffic control, and won’t be used to look for those who speed, run red lights or commit other traffic-related infractions. The type of technology being employed currently has shown to be effective in recovering stolen vehicles, identifying wanted suspects and to act as a deterrent.
