Las Vegas, NV (AP) - The historic El Cortez has announced it will become the second downtown Las Vegas property to adopt a 21-and-older age limit for hotel guests and casino gamblers.
Adam Wiesberg, general manager of the 80-year-old landmark, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Wednesday that the policy will begin April 1 for hotel stays and identification checks will begin later at all entrances.
The transition comes as the property completes a $25 million casino floor redesign and the remodeling of its 200-room tower. An original 47 rooms are still being renovated. They date to when the gambling house first opened in 1941.
Former owner Jackie Gaughan lived in a penthouse suite atop the 14-story property from 1980 until his death in 2014.
The El Cortez was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
At the new Circa Resort and Casino, owner Derek Stevens adopted a 21-and-older policy when the 35-story property opened in October 2020.
Nevada law requires gamblers to be at least 21 years old, and the state Gaming Control Board encourages casinos to keep minors away from gambling tables.
