Las Vegas, NV (AP) - Firefighters spent several hours Monday containing an intense fire that billowed smoke at the Republic Serves trash recycling facility in North Las Vegas.
No injuries were reported. A North Las Vegas Fire spokesman says the cause might have been ignited by something flammable hauled to the site in a truckload of trash.
Firefighters arrived about 5 a.m. to find hundreds of compressed bales of recycled cardboard and plastics burning in an outdoor area. The fire also damaged the building. Fire crews surrounded the scene and poured steady streams of water into the burning material while a plume of smoke blanketed hillside neighborhoods. More than a million gallons of water was used to douse the flames.
Firefighters stayed on the scene for most of the day to make sure that hotspots didn't re-ignite.
