Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – A former basketball standout at Bishop Gorman High will plead guilty to charges related to a fatal wreck that happened in December of 2020.
Police say Zaon Collins was speeding and driving impaired when he crashed into a car being driven by 52-year-old Eric Echevarria near Blue Diamond and Fort Apache. Echevarria was killed. Police say Collins’ was driving nearly 90 mph in a 35 zone when he hit Echevarria.
Collins’ case was delayed numerous times, with his lawyers arguing that the DUI charge against the then 19-year-old Collins was based on an unconstitutional Nevada law regarding driving while under the influence of marijuana.
Collins has been on house arrest since the crash. Under terms of the guilty plea, he may only spend as little as 3 months in jail on a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter. His next court appearance is scheduled for next week.
