(National Park Service) - Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Government Wash will reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, after removing long-term encampments and restoring safety, environmental stability, and public access.
The project addressed impacts from unauthorized encampments, impaired access routes, abandoned materials, and resource damage. Staff removed encampments, cleared over 12,000 pounds of litter, and repaired erosion and compaction.
The National Park Service restored the site by creating 51 campsites, improving access roads, clarifying boundaries, and reducing congestion while protecting natural resources. Canoe, kayak, and small boat access to the lake is also improved.
Government Wash’s years of sustained encampment activity created safety hazards, hindered emergency access, and pressured natural resources and maintenance. The completed work restores the area to safe conditions and improves visitor use.
Visitors will notice cleaner campsites and roads, improved access, and an organized approach to recreational sites and activities. Overnight stays are limited to 28 days to maintain improvements and support sustainable use.
