Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – On Thursday, the Southern Nevada Health District reported that 6 more cases of West Nile Virus had been diagnosed in humans, bring the total number of human cases in Clark County this year to 20.

Of the 20, the majority have been neuroinvasive, which can cause a person to experience symptoms in addition to being more susceptible to developing meningitis or encephalitis. However, only one in five people will experience symptoms.

The remaining cases are termed non-neuroinvasive and can result in fevers, headaches, and vomiting. The Health District is urging people to “fight the bite” and do things like eliminate pools of standing water that are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. They also recommend using EPA-recommended insect repellant, and to report mosquito activity to SNHD at 702-759-1633.
