Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - Even though pandemic-related restrictions continue to lift across Nevada, many are continuing to deal with job loss as evidenced by new numbers from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

For the week ending March 6th, initial claims for unemployment insurance were up 14.6%, compared to the previous week’s total. This is the second consecutive week of increases in initial claims.

Continued claims, which represent the current number of insured unemployed workers filing weekly for unemployment insurance benefits, were down just under 1%.

Nevada’s Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program, which provides benefits to individuals who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits, saw an increase of 15,400 claims from last week’s total of 56,295.

Nevada’s State Extended Benefit (SEB) program currently provides up to 20 weeks of benefits to individuals who have exhausted both their regular and PEUC program benefits. Nevada saw a decrease of 13,260 claims from a week ago.

The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, which provides benefits for self-employed, 1099 contract workers, and gig workers saw 5,152 initial claims filed in the week ending March 6, a decline of 23.6%, from last week’s total. Initial applications for the PUA program continue to be highly variable due to fraudulent applications.
