Man charged with causing massive fatal crash facing new charges

Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – Las Vegas Metro Police have filed additional charges against a 19-year-old man they say caused a 12-car crash that killed two people on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Metro, Jose Gutierrez was driving at a high rate of speed on eastbound Cheyenne Avenue when he slammed into cars waiting at the red light at the intersection with Jones Boulevard.

A passenger in Gutierrez’ car was killed, as was the driver of another vehicle. A number of people were sent to hospitals with injuries that ranged from minor to critical.

Gutierrez now faces two counts of open murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of batter with the use of a deadly weapon.

Gutierrez remains hospitalized with injuries suffered in the crash, and missed a scheduled court appearance on Thursday. The accident remains under investigation.
