Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - The man seen in a courtroom video leaping over a judge's bench and attacking her back in January learned how much time he must spend behind bars on Thursday.
Deobra Redden must spend at least 26 years in prison for the attack on Judge Mary Kay Holthus. The sentence was for 26-64 years. Redden attacked Holthus as she was about to sentence him for separate crimes. He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to attempted murder charges in the case
The attack, required six people to subdue Redden as he repeatedly attempted to slam the judge's head to the floor.
Redden's attorney called the sentence too harsh, citing his client's history of mental illness.
While Judge Holthus was not in the courtroom as the sentence was handed down, she wrote a letter asking the the maximum sentence be handed down.
