Las Vegas, (KXNT) – The Southern Nevada Health District says that a traveler who was in Las Vegas on Monday, Oct. 13, has been confirmed with measles, and others may have been exposed.
The traveler, who was not identified by health officials, spent time in Terminal 3 at the E Gates at Harry Reid International Airport. The person boarded an 8 a.m. flight and reported visiting no additional locations outside of the airport, a spokesperson said in a news release from SNHD.
It's the first known case in Nevada since an outbreak that began at a West Texas elementary school in January. As of Oct. 14, a total of 1,596 confirmed measles cases had been reported across 42 states, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Measles is highly contagious, and the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area.
Clark County has not had a confirmed measles case involving a resident since 2018. In April 2024, SNHD reported a measles exposure involving a visitor to the area, but no local cases were reported from that incident.
People who may have been in Terminal 3 and E Gates around 8 a.m. on October 13th, or who may have had contact with the individual while at the airport, should review their immunization status and contact their health care providers if they are not fully vaccinated.
