Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is warning the public about the dangers of celebratory gunfire and illegal fireworks as the Independence Day holiday approaches.
Discharging a firearm and endangering the public is a crime punishable by up to one year in jail. It often leads to damaged roofs, cars, and other property. The worst-case scenario is when gunfire leads to accidental deaths.
Celebratory gunfire calls during the Fourth of July weekend could overwhelm emergency service personnel dealing with other incidents related to the holiday weekend such as DUI, domestic disturbances, and violent crime.
Illegal fireworks are also a concern for police because of the danger they pose. Citizens are reminded that any fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in Clark County. Their use could lead to serious injury and substantial property damage if they ignite a structure or vehicle. Offenders could also face up to $1,000 in fines.
To report illegal fireworks, citizens are asked to visit www.ISpyFireworks.com or call the police non-emergency line at 311. The use of 911 should be reserved only for life- threatening police, fire, and medical emergencies.
