Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – In an effort to curb the high number of stolen cars made by Hyundai, Las Vegas Metro Police and the automaker are teaming up to hold an event this weekend that’s aimed at improving vehicle security.
The theft rate for certain types of Hyundai models has increased a whopping 1,000% between 2020 and 2023, according to a study from the Highway Loss Data Institute, this after videos showing techniques used to steal the vehicles went viral.
The event will be held in the parking lot of Metro’s headquarters at 400 South Marin Luther King Jr. Blvd this Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 6pm. The event is free, with participants taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
During those times, specially trained mobile service technicians will install and complete a software upgrade that is designed to make the vehicles harder to steal. All those taking part will also receive a free steering wheel lock, courtesy of Hyundai.
