Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - A Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper who was struck while laying down stop strips to stop a suspected carjacker on I-15 has died from his injuries.

“Trooper May’s heroism exemplified the definition of a silent guardian. His dedication and service will never be forgotten,” said Director George Togliatti. “Our hearts go out to this grieving family and recognize the unique sacrifice to the State of Nevada. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”

Trooper May is survived by his wife and two children. The Injured Police Officer Fund (IPOF) has established a fund to assist Trooper May’s family. If you would like to help, donations can be made through www.IPOF.Vegas.

May was part of a large contingent of law enforcement that was attempting to stop a suspected carjacker in an incident that began near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Tuesday afternoon.

May was laying down stop strips on I-15 South when the suspected carjacker, 60-year-old Douglas Claiborne, struck him, causing May to go through the windshield. Police used a pit maneuver to stop Claiborne's car, then shot and killed him when they say he reached for a trooper's weapon.

May was airlifted to U.M.C, but was taken off of life support Thursday night. May is the 12th member of the Nevada Highway Patrol to die in the line of duty.
