Las Vegas, NV (AP) - A Connecticut police officer charged with driving under the influence in a Las Vegas crash that killed a fellow officer posted $100,000 bail but remains detained while awaiting approval of house arrest and to be fitted with an electronic monitoring device, according to Clark County Detention Center officials.
New Haven Officer Robert Ferraro was arrested Friday on charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving in the 4 a.m. crash that killed fellow New Haven Officer Joshua Castellano, a seven-year member of the force.
Las Vegas police said Ferraro lost control of the Rolls Royce he was driving when it approached the intersection of Spring Mountain and Decatur at high speed and struck a parked car and other objects before overturning and coming to rest upright.
Police said Castellano was ejected and suffered fatal injuries, while Ferraro and four others in the car suffered minor injuries.
The process for qualifying for electronic monitoring devices and house arrest can take seven to 10 days, authorities said. Ferraro has been place on administrative leave by the New Haven police department pending the results of an internal affairs investigation. His next appearance in a Las Vegas court is scheduled for Tuesday.
