Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - No criminal charges will be filed against any of the 4 Las Vegas Metro Police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man during a Black Lives Matter Protest last June.
Jorge Gomez was shot and killed near the Federal Courthouse downtown during a night of unrest stemming from the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
During a fact finding review held last month, officers testified that Gomez, who was heavily armed and wearing body armor, moved in a threatening manner that made them decide to open fire. In all, officers fired 19 rounds at Gomez over 3 seconds. None of the officers were wearing body cameras.
In a document released Tuesday, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson wrote, “As there is no factual or legal basis upon which to charge, unless new circumstances come to light which contradict the factual foundation upon which this decision is made, no charges will be forthcoming against the shooting officers.”
Gomez was shot on the same night that Metro Policer officer Shay Mikalonis was shot near Circus Circus, leaving Mikalonis paralyzed from the neck down. The man charged with that shooting, Edgar Samaniego, is scheduled to go on trial in June.
