LAS VEGAS (AP) — One person died and at least three others were hurt as they were rescued from a burning apartment near Twain and Arville, authorities said Tuesday.

Clark County Fire Battalion Chief Rian Glassford said the fire was reported a little before 11 a.m. in a two-story unit at the Twain Estates Apartments. Arriving firefighters battled flames that burned from a downstairs unit through the roof.

“When they made their way closer to the apartment, they got some calls for help and there were people trapped inside,” Glassford told reporters. “They immediately went into rescue mode and went in to save the people.”

Three people were hospitalized with unspecified injuries, Glassford said.

Several adjoining four-unit apartment buildings in the closely built complex were evacuated and Glassford said the American Red Cross was helping displaced neighbors.

Investigators say that it appears that careless disposal of smoking materials led to the fire, but the incident remains under investigation.
