
Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper is in critical condition and the suspect is dead after a chase on 15 South Tuesday afternoon.
Officers did a pit maneuver to stop the vehicle on 15 South between Sahara and Spring Mountain, then converged on the car. They fIred shots at the suspect, believing that he was reaching for a weapon. That man was identified Wednesday as 60-year-old Douglas Claiborne.

The trooper, identified as 13-year NHP veteran Micah May, was hurt when the vehicle struck him as he was laying spike strips. May was airlifted to U.M.C. Trauma, where he remains in critical condition on Thursday.
Both sides of 15 were closed for investigation, with northbound lanes blocked between Flamingo and Sahara and southbound lanes closed from Lake Mead down to Spring Mtn. Officers also closed access from the Southern Beltway to 15 North and from U.S. 95 to 15 South.
The chase began after reports of a carjacking near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway
