Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – Las Vegas Athletic Clubs around Las Vegas have closed their pools after failing to reach an agreement with the Southern Nevada Health District on how to keep them open.
Back in February, a woman died in a pool at an LVAC location. The pool didn’t have a lifeguard on duty. Video was released showing the woman struggling in the pool for several minutes with no one coming to her aid.
Under a 2018 waiver, pools were allowed to not have a lifeguard on duty as long as there was a video stream that staff could monitor in case of emergency.
After the drowning, SNHD withdrew that waiver and said clubs that had pools needed to be staffed with a lifeguard.
SNHD said that Las Vegas Athletic Club have submitted a number of proposals to keep pools open, but all have been turned down.
The pool closures may not be permanent, though, as the Health District said they’re continuing to work with LVAC on a long-term solution.
