Las Vegas, NV (AP) - Tourism officials plan to spend $435 million renovating older parts of the Las Vegas Convention Center to match the look of a sprawling new exhibition hall section that opened last year.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority this week approved the expenditure as part of a phased project first approved in 2017.
The renovation of the existing conference center was delayed when the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020 and room-tax revenue dropped.
The two-year project, slated to begin in 2024, will upgrade the halls and their facades to standards established when the new $1 billion expansion opened last June.
A collaboration between Hunt Construction and the Penta Building Group was selected for the preconstruction and construction phases of the project, the Review-Journal reported. Details are expected to be outlined in April.
Authority board members also approved access for a new portion of the Vegas Loop, an underground transit system using Tesla electric vehicles that connects the old and new parts of the convention center, the newspaper said.
Elon Musk’s The Boring Co. is designing a network of tunnels in the resort corridor that would connect 51 stations, including stops at Harry Reid International Airport and Allegiant Stadium.
