The first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has formed.
The tropical system off the Texas coast has developed into Tropical Storm Arthur. According to the National Hurricane Center's 10 a.m. advisory, Arthur has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is moving northeast at nine miles-per-hour. The storm's central pressure has dipped slightly to 1001 millibars.
"Given the unrelenting westerly shear and Arthur's close proximity to land, it seems unlikely that much additional strengthening will occur," NHC forecasters said in their 10 a.m. discussion. "Heavy rainfall and life-threatening flash flooding remain the primary hazard with this system."
NHC forecasters expect Arthur to move inland over southwestern Louisiana by tonight. While the center of circulation will hover over the western part of the state, forecasters expect the heaviest rainfall over the Baton Rouge area and the Northshore. The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center Shows those areas receiving between four and six inches of rain. Other models show parts of those regions receiving more than 10 inches of rain.
