Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – The Nevada Board of Examiners has given the go-ahead the to implement and start building the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) new and modernized Unemployment Insurance system. The modernization aims to make the process of filing for unemployment easier.

When finished, DETR say the UI website will operate more efficiently and be more accessible to both users and staff.
The new system will collect unemployment taxes, pay out benefits to eligible claimants, and handle appeals. It is also designed to handle tough economic times, prevent fraud, and implement new benefit programs quickly.
The system came under heavy criticism during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when casinos and non-essential businesses were ordered to close, forcing thousands to flood the system with claims.
It won’t happen overnight, though. The new system isn’t expected to be fully completed for another four years. The cost of the upgrade is estimated at $72 million, with the money coming from the federal government’s ARPA grant.
