Las Vegas, NV (KXNT/WalletHub) - Each new headline about a mass shooting, terrorist attack, hate crime, or natural disaster reminds us how fragile safety can feel—for ourselves and for our loved ones. Beyond physical threats, Americans also face financial risks, with inflation remaining a pressing concern.

Of course, safety levels vary across the country. To identify the safest states in America, the financial website WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 52 key indicators of safety, grouped into five categories. These measures range from assaults per capita to the financial losses from climate disasters per resident, as well as economic factors like unemployment.

Nevada ranked 30th in the WalletHub survey. The Silver State received high marks in the categories of “Emergency Preparedness” (5th) and “Workplace Safety” (11th), but our overall ranking was hurt by low rankings in the categories of “Personal and Residential Safety” (48th), “Financial Safety” (49th), and “Road Safety” (43rd).

WalletHub ranked Vermont as the safest of the 50 states, followed by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Utah.

Southeast states fared the worst in the survey, with Louisiana ranked as the least safe state in the nation, followed by Mississippi, Texas, Florida and Arkansas.
