PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Within a seven-hour span Wednesday night, eight people were shot in six different shootings, according to authorities. Two of the victims have died, including a teenager.

Just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, two teenagers were gunned down in Port Richmond at Campbell Square. A 16-year-old was shot in the leg, and 19-year-old Anthony Cheever was shot in the chest. He died later at the hospital.

Three hours earlier — and less than a mile away — 31-year-old Bryan Lee Veney Jr. was shot several times in the face and body near B and East Somerset streets. He also died at the hospital.

Throughout the night, the violence continued: A 25-year-old was shot in the leg around midnight in the same area, near Kensington Avenue and Lippincott Street. Two 27-year-olds were shot — one in the chest, shoulder and leg near Frankford, along Wakeling Street; the other in the foot, in Ogontz.

And around 2 a.m., a 41-year-old and 39-year-old were gunned down in Olney, near Fisher Park, at 9th and Spencer streets.

Just a few days ago, nine people were gunned down in Philadelphia; one was killed.

The homicide rate has been steadily hovering at about 10 percent since this time last year, with more gun arrests than last year.
