PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Few doubt that psychiatric issues can run in families.

Studies have shown that children whose parents have certain psychiatric illnesses are at an increased risk of attempting suicide and committing violent offenses.

The researchers also found that children whose parents had mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, also had an increased likelihood for problems although at a more modest level.

Those who care for people with psychiatric issues can not afford to simply react to what they see in the offspring of people suffering from psychiatric issues, so anticipating potential problems ahead of time can save lives, and it's important to remember that support is essential.
