PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There are certain ways we can protect ourselves from having serious complications if exposed to COVID-19.
Having diabetes means you may be more likely to get very sick if you catch it. But the risk is likely lower if your diabetes is in good control.
On the other hand, if your diabetes isn't well managed, your blood sugar may go up and down a lot, raising the risk for health problems tied to diabetes. Elevations in blood sugar can cause inflammation, and we know COVID-19 may do the same.
If you are a diabetic, now is the time to act.
To reduce your risk, take your medicine or insulin as directed, and know what to do if you get sick.
You should talk to your doctor about several key issues: how often should you check my blood sugar if sick, and will you need to change your diet, medicine, or insulin if you get sick? These simple steps can make a big difference.
