PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person is dead following a house fire late Wednesday night in the city's Juniata section.

Fire crews were called to the home on Bennington Street a few minutes before midnight. They were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes. However, that was long enough for the flames and smoke to claim the life of a 67-year-old man inside and several animals.

Even though the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel used the tragedy as a warning for everyone to be safe when using heaters and other items to stay warm this winter.

"With the cold, if you're using heating appliances, please make sure those are serviced, you're using them properly," he said.

Thiel also warned people to make sure all smoke detectors are working properly. The person who died in this fire has not been identified.
