The boy was walking home from school, like many other children, around 3:30 p.m. Capt. John Walker says he was shot near a corner store at Margaret Street and Torresdale Avenue by someone in a car driving by.
One of the bullets hit the child in the back of the head — criticially injuring him. He was rushed to St. Christophers Hospital for Children.
Jahaira Cruz, a medical assistant, happened to be close, says she called 911 and tended to the boy.
"I noticed that the young man had a wound to the neck, on the left side of his neck. So I instinctively just kicked in and grabbed someone's sweatshirt and correctly applied pressure to the area," she said.
It is not clear who the intended target was. Walker says the incident was likely over drugs. Police are asking for help frothe public.
"We know we have multiple witnesses out here who may have seen something. And we're just asking for help here in this critical situation, where you got a 10-year-old. ... Do the right thing for your community. This kids obviously lives in this community, goes to school in this community. His parents live in this community."

This shooting comes just a couple of weeks after two other shootings left 2-year-old Nikolette Rivera dead and 11-month-old Yazeem Jenkins critically injured.
