Police responded to a home on Haddington Lane, near 57th Street, around noon on Monday. Inside the dining room, officers found Ayyub Leach, who had been shot once in the chest and took him to the hospital, where he died.
Officers found 19-year-old Nikeem Leach a few blocks away. Officials say he ran from the scene to get help.
Sources say Nikeem said he did not intend to shoot his brother but instead misfired after he thought he cleared the gun.
He was not licensed to carry the weapon, and sources say he told authorities he found the weapon on the street. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate.
Nikeem is scheduled to be in court later this month.
