PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia family was found gunned down inside their home Wednesday afternoon, and police say the suspect is a relative who is now in custody.
Philadelphia police say they received a call for a wellness check at the house on Walton Ave near 51st Street for a 51-year-old woman and her husband when they didn't show up for their jobs at a Northeast Philadelphia nursing home.
"The sergeant on scene noticed the trash hadn't been taken out, and knowing that it is trash day, thought that odd. Mail was in the mailbox, car was in front of the house," said Deputy Commissioner Joe Sullivan.
When police went inside the house, Sullivan says the woman, her husband who is in his 40s-50s, a 18-year-old man and a 7-year-old boy were all found to be shot dead on two floors of the home.
Police found another family member on the second floor of the house, and he is now in police custody and is being questioned.
Neighbors say recently he had become mentally unstable.
This is the third child shot in just 10 days.
"It's tough, and it has taken a toll on our officers. It is never easy to go into a crime scene, and it's that much harder when there is a child involved," Sullivan said.
