Police say it was a stray bullet from a shootout on 200 Simpson Street around 7:40 p.m.
According to police, a man in a blue/silver Chevy Silverado drove down the street, put his arm out the driver’s window and fired a gun at a group of people standing outside. The driver continued southbound while two men pulled guns and returned fire.
The Silverado then rear-ended a GMC Yukon. The driver jumped out and drove off in the Yukon, but abandoned the car on 64th and Race Streets.
While police were on scene, the driver returned and attempted to get the Silverado back. He was caught and arrested on the 6300 block of Race Street.
Police say the two other shooters fled in a maroon Ford Taurus, which was recovered on North 64th Street. The suspect’s name has not been released at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide at 215-686-3334 or call 911.
“A child who’s one of the most vulnerable individuals in our community, in our population, playing innocently with a toy...it takes a lot out of you,” said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.
Outlaw said nearby officers heard the shootout, rushed to the scene and took the boy to the hospital.
Councilman Curtis Jones, who represents that part of the city, thought of his family when he heard the news.
“I have grandkids that boy’s age. And if you aren’t safe on your own porch, where are you safe?”
“I’m learning the different neighborhoods, but learning the history around different blocks and different parts of the city. I know that this is a neighborhood been plagued by violence and has been feeling like they’ve been under siege for quite some time here,” she said.
At least two other people were killed by gun violence on Saturday, a man in his 20s and a 34-year-old in North Philadelphia.
Early Sunday morning, at least four people were shot and wounded. Police say all four are in stable condition.
