PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The man authorities say stole an ambulance and led police on a wild goose chase around Northeast Philadelphia Friday night has been charged.

Officers went to the Roosevelt Inn around 9 p.m. Friday for reports of a man with a bloodied face and a woman fighting. When first responders tried to tend to 42-year-old Mark Giwerowski's injuries, they say he became combative, ran into the parking lot and jumped into an ambulance.

Giwerowski, they say, took off, hitting 2nd District Officer Tim Kelly, who was yelling for him to stop. But authorities say Giwerowki ignored it and instead drove towards Kelly, who then shot at him, striking him in his lower body.

But Giwerowski kept driving, first heading south on the Boulevard, with lights flashing, striking a car near Cottman Avenue, and then hitting an unmanned cop car near Tyson Avenue and then two others along Frankford Avenue.

Eventually, state troopers put down spike strips to flatten the tires.

It eventually worked, and the ambulance crashed along Talbot Street near Pennypack Park.

Cops say Giweroski struggled, so they tased him before handcuffing him. He was taken to the hospital and he remains in critical condition.

The chase lasted over 90 minutes.

Kelly and another citizen were also injured, but were taken to the hospital, treated, and released.

Giwerowski is now charged with robbery, carjacking, unauthorized use of an automobile, fleeing police, accident involving death or injury, and multiple counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and related charges.

The police department says they are also doing an internal investigation.
