CAMDEN, NJ (KYW Newsradio) — A project is moving ahead to bring a larger-than-life statue of local boxing icon “Jersey Joe” Walcott to the Camden waterfront. A fundraiser is scheduled Friday night on the Battleship New Jersey to assist in the effort.

Already, $50,000 is in the bank for the statue, and the hope is to get a lot more at the Battle on the Battleship event. Camden County is fronting the $185,000 price tag for the statue that’ll be repaid through fundraisers like this.

“Originally we looked at a location in the city near the historical society,” Walcott’s grandson, Walter Cream, said. “But the scope of the project, the opportunity to showcase the city with the symbol of a great hero, led us to the opportunity to move it to the Camden waterfront.”

There’ll be several amateur matches with former pros on hand as well. Tickets are available at Camden County’s website.

As for the statue, preliminary work is already underway, and hopes are to have it erected near Camden's Adventure Aquarium sometime in 2021.
