CHERRY HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Sports radio host Big Daddy Graham made his first public appearance Thursday night since the summer, when he was hospitalized with a condition that left him partially paralyzed.

The event was scheduled as a launch for a new book, "The Great Book of Philadelphia Sports Lists." But the sold-out crowd was really there to celebrate the return of a beloved figure.

"I missed him. I missed him a lot. And when I heard what really happened that was sad. So this is very uplifting," said one attendee.

WIP overnight host Graham has been confined to a wheelchair since being stricken at his shore home on July 21.

"A blood vessel burst in my back and bled into my spinal cord and that's what caused me being paralyzed. A one-in-a-million thing. Not a car accident, not falling down a flight of steps," he explained.

He's still rehabbing and still hoping for what would be a miraculous recovery. Meanwhile, ever the comedian, he searches for humor amidst the tragedy.

"Walking down the street and standing in my living room, and boom! Next thing you know I'm laying on the floor and never got up. I sound like that commercial, 'I've fallen and I can't get up.' That was me. But I didn't fall. I put myself on the floor trying to get rid of this insane pain," he said.

Graham was joking and in good spirits as he signed copies of the book he wrote with his colleague, Glen Macnow. But he admits that's only his public face.

"I'm not tellin' a lot of jokes at home. Unfortunately, my wife Debbie, who has to do all the work, all the real work. Day-to-day work, she's not hearing many jokes out of me. She's not. Our house is not funny," he said.

He's overcome throat cancer, back surgery and a bout with hiccups that lasted nearly two days. But this, he says, is his toughest battle.

He's hoping to return to the air sometime soon.
