The outfielder has spent the last month with the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks after joining the Kansas City Royals organization, and he has enjoyed being back in Delaware.
"It's really fun," Hill said. "Especially looking up and seeing my family members rooting me on every game. Then seeing old friends and old people I used to play with back in high school and things like that. It's definitely weird at first, but it's awesome."
Hill was drafted by Boston out of high school in 2014. He got as far as High-A in the Red Sox organization in 2018.
Then, this past offseason started a bit of whirlwind for Hill. He was selected by the Tigers in the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 Draft, and then was immediately traded to the Yankees.
He spent the first part of this season with New York's High-A team in the Florida State League, the Tampa Tarpons, until he was released in June. He then joined the independent Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association, and played well, hitting .375 in 40 games.
The Kansas City Royals liked what they saw and brought him into their organization and over to Wilmington in early August.
"I feel like my season (as a whole), between independent ball and when I was with the Yankees, I haven't really had a bad season," he said. "But when I went to independent ball, I kind of figured a lot of stuff out. Just kind of took the knowledge I learned there, playing with older guys there, just kind of roll with it from there and see what I can do with it."
Hill has thrived with the Blue Rocks, hitting .393 in 18 games with a home run and nine runs batted in.
There are a lot of benefits to playing in your hometown area, but Hill's favorite perk is one to savor.
Hill and the Blue Rocks are hosting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans this weekend.
