PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — "Floor is Lava" is one of the most popular series on Netflix right now. And the person who came up with the game show is a Boyertown native and Temple University graduate.

Megan McGrath graduated from Temple in 2012 then moved out to Los Angeles. Eventually, she became the vice president of development for Haymaker Productions.

"And my job is really to come up with TV shows," she explained.

Long before that, however, she was a kid in Boyertown. And in her development job, she thought back to her childhood.

"I was remembering playing Floor is Lava as a kid in Boyertown with my brother in our basement and also on the playground in our elementary school."

"I can tell you that it's very slippery," she shared. "The contestants have maintained the whole season that it's hot."

And so is the show. "Floor is Lava" topped the Netflix charts over the last month and is a sizzling streaming success that may have come out at the perfect time.

"Families are cooped up inside and quarantined together and are bored and are looking for something that will make them laugh and we fill that void," said McGrath.

What's more, she posited, is the vicarious thrill viewers get from the show.

"We love seeing families playing together and laughing together," she said. "Especially during this sort of uncertain time."
