PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Social distancing efforts have brought drive-in movie theaters back in an unprecedented reprisal. Fortunately for Philadelphians, many of them are free.

The Mann Center in Fairmount Park is hosting the Parks and Recreation’s summer movie series every Wednesday and Friday for the next five weeks.

“You can expect classic films like ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Ferris Bueller's Day Off,’ to family-friendly favorites like ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Trolls,’ ” said Marc Wilken, Parks and Rec concessions manager.

In a time where many events have been canceled or postponed, he's happy they were able to make some changes and keep their movie series going.

“People need something to do right now, and we're just happy to be able to provide an outlet for people to enjoy and come together as a community,” he added.

In addition to the movies, there will also be concessions and music. Restrooms are also available for attendees.

“The remainder of the time, they must stay in their vehicle and wear a mask,” Wilken noted, “so we are mindful of health and safety protocols. But we also want people to have a nice, fun time.”

The drive-ins are free but advanced registration is required.

The series runs through Sept. 25.
