In an effort to increase the tree canopy in Philadelphia neighborhoods, the city is giving away trees at nearly two dozen giveaway events across the city this fall.
TreePhilly has been offering the free trees since 2012 as part of it's Community Yard Tree Giveaway program.
"We have given away over 24,000 trees to Philadelphia residents since then," said Erica Smith Fichman, TreePhilly program manager at Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. "Anyone across the city can get them. You need to be able to plant them on your private property in the city of Philadelphia."

The giveaway events will be hosted by community partners. You can also request a free yard tree online.
"Check out the map," said Smith Fichman. "Check out which event is closest to you and contact the community host to register for that event."
They vary from large shade trees to small flowering trees and fruit trees.
Residents need to be able to plant the trees on their private property. Those with limited mobility can also apply for free yard tree delivery and planting.
"People love the type of trees we give away," noted Smith Fichman.
The next free tree giveaway events take place at Tacony Creek Park on Oct. 26 and Hunting Park Playground on Oct. 30.
