Community College of Philadelphia students greeted their new lion mascot named Roary with a roar of approval at a noontime ceremony. Roary replaces Colonial Phil, who was ditched last year over concerns he represented a time of slave owners and oppression.
"Colonial Phil was like, intimidating to some of the students and some people. And it wasn't what the diversity and the vision of the school had in mind," said CCP grad Troy Bundy, who gathered signatures against the old mascot two years ago.
"When I first started the petition, honestly I never thought this day would happen," he said.
"He shows diversity. He shows pride. He shows everything that Community College is about," Bundy added.
