Angry customer accused of coughing at grocery store cashier faces charges

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 75-year-old Bucks County man is facing criminal charges, accused of coughing on a grocery store worker.

According to a criminal complaint, James Edelstein told police he got angry because employees at the Redner’s on Lincoln Highway in Levittown did not put his bags into his cart or walk him to his car.

Edelstein said when the manager approached him, he refused to see him, saying he was too young to be a manager. Instead, Edelstein demanded to see the general manager.

A cashier named in the complaint said she told Edelstein that the manager was on his way. She said Edelstein then pulled down his mask, coughed at her, and said, “I just tested positive for COVID. Hope I don’t spread my germs.”

According to the complaint, Edelstein later told police he wanted to cause a scene to show his anger, adding, “These kids had an education about an unhappy customer. I am happy I caused a disturbance …. If they had someone experienced, there would not have been an issue. Everything slowed down, and that made me happy.”

He is facing charges including misdemeanor assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and summary harassment.

He was charged via summons rather than being arrested.
