PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time ever, the City of Philadelphia will officially celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday know as Day of the Dead, and festivities will take place in Love Park this Friday and Saturday.

A giant Dia De Muertos altar was unveiled in Love Park and Rocia Vazquez, acting consul of Mexico in Philadelphia, explains it's in honor of the traditional Mexican holiday that's celebrated on Nov. 1-2.

"Day of the Dead is celebrating and remembering loved ones," Vazquez explained.

"So normally, either at the altars or the cemeteries or both, you offer the dead food and drinks and things that they loved when they were here," she added.

The altar was created by artist Cesar Vivaros.

"We love the opportunity to be able to show everyone, all the residents here in Philadelphia and visitors, how rich, diverse, vibrant our cultures and traditions are," Vazquez said.

And that means a lot to Vivaros.

"It's symbolic of the fact that we have been accepted, we are welcomed, we are loved (here in Philadelphia)," he said.

The altar will be on display until Nov. 10.
