Delaware Avenue will be extended as part of the ongoing I-95 rebuilding project.
Project manager Paul Schultes said it will be extended a little over a mile in the Northeast. It currently ends at Orthodox Street now, but will eventually extend along the Delaware River waterfront to Tacony Street, near the Dietz and Watson plant.

"The benefits will be the ability to have a continuous route that connects to I-95 at both ends," Schultes said. "It also will allow trucks in the Bridesburg neighborhood that are really just trying to get to and from I-95 to divert off of Richmond Street and Bridge Street."
He expects this will ease some traffic congestion in that area, by removing as much traffic as possible from more residential streets. This will also lead to a ramp adjustment.
"The current ramps at Bridge Street, the southbound off-ramp and the northbound on-ramp, would be located up to this new intersection where Delaware Avenue will intersect Tacony Street," he explained.
Schultes said the people who live in the area or use these roads will love the change. However, those people probably won't see the finished extension for another three or four years.
